Solved: Usage of CISCO VPN currently limited
The situation has since returned to normal, and Cisco VPN is now fully operational without restrictions.

Due to the currently increased use of CISCO VPN, the central CISCO VPN service is temporarily reaching its technical limits. The number of assignable IP addresses from the corresponding address range is exhausted.

This becomes noticeable because connection attempts are rejected with the message "no assigned address".

Please use the alternatives eduVPN or an SSH tunnel as far as possible. Documentation for this can be found on the following websites:

On 30.04.2026, from 1:00 AM, the DESY account for the Zoom videoconferencing service will be migrated to ZoomX. During the transition, which may take several hours, disruptions to existing videoconference connections may occur.

After the migration, a new dial-in number must be used for phone participation:

For this reason, it is recommended to resend invitations for already scheduled meetings or recurring appointments after the migration, if phone dial-in is relevant.

No other changes will result from this migration.

The migration ensures improved compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), as the service will be operated on servers of Deutsche Telekom in Germany.

The Registry resource "confluence" will be deactivated on 26.05.2026
On 26.05.2026 the Registry resource "confluence" will be removed from the accounts to which it has been assigned and deactivated afterwards. Since no service access is currently managed via this permission, no disruptions should occur for users.

After deactivation, it will no longer be possible for namespace admins to assign this resource.

The Registry configurations (Blueprints, AutoAssignments, Dependencies, CleanUp rules) will be centrally changed from "confluence" to "xwiki-desy". Nevertheless, it is recommended to review Blueprints and AutoAssignments afterward.

Automations that access the Registry via REST API and check for this resource must be adjusted or removed by the developers accordingly.

Change of the Default Calendar Entry Behavior in Zimbra
The default setting for automatic appointment entries in the Zimbra Calendar has been changed centrally: Appointments will now only appear in your calendar after you have accepted them.

If you prefer to continue having appointments added automatically (without manual acceptance), you can adjust this setting in the classic web interface of Zimbra[1] as follows:

1. Log in at https://mail.desy.de.
2. If necessary, switch to the classic view[1] (this option is only available there).
3. Go to "Settings" → "Calendar".
4. Enable "Automatically add received appointments to calendar".

Note: Automatically added appointments do not count as acceptances. To confirm your attendance, to also notify the organizer, you must explicitly accept the appointment - either by clicking in the invitation email or right-clicking the pre-added appointment in your calendar and selecting "Accept".

This change to the default setting has been implemented for security reasons.

Important changes in printing service using Linux and macOS
As part of the modernization of the printer service, significant changes will take effect for Linux and macOS users printing from the internal network. Printing using the guest print service via guestprint10 is not affected by these changes.

Please review the following points and adjust your settings as needed:

Discontinuation of Predefined Printer Names:
- Only one printer name per printer will remain (e.g., "...ps1").
- Printer names for special formats (e.g., "...ps1a3") or color printing (e.g., "...cp1") will be removed. Predefined settings are no longer available. Please manually select the respective tray or format in the print dialog of the used application.

Review and Adjust Printer Settings:
- Users of centrally managed Linux computers (so-called "green desktops") do not need to take any further action.
- If you are currently using spool-lpr.desy.de to setup printers, please switch to the new service cups.desy.de. Documentation for setting up cups.desy.de can be found here:

This host was used to exchange calendar data with Zimbra via the CalDAV protocol.

The planned work for migrating the data from Mattermost to Nextcloud Talk has been completed.

Automated Upgrade to macOS 26 on centrally managed Macs on 14.04.
On Tuesday, 14.04.2026, an automated upgrade to macOS 26 will be performed on all Macs registered in DESY’s device management tool "Jamf Pro".

Macs that have already been updated to macOS 26 by that date will not be affected. Devices running an older version will be upgraded and automatically restarted - unsaved data may be lost during this process.

Users will be notified in advance via system messages and notifications on affected devices. They are encouraged to perform the version update themselves before the centrally scheduled upgrade.

Necessary exceptions can be reported to the group administrators.

Zeuthen - Migration from IFH.de to DESY.de
As part of the campus power supply maintenance, updates and configuration changes were also implemented in the Computing Centre.

Among other things, the Kerberos realm "IFH.DE" was decommissioned, and all Zeuthen systems were migrated to the DESY-wide realm "DESY.DE".

If you're using Kerberos on self-administered devices, you should also update them accordingly.

On 12.05.2026, an insecure method for sending emails (SMTP/STARTTLS, Port 587) will be disabled. To ensure you can continue sending emails after this date, please check your email client (e.g., Thunderbird) for the following settings and adjust them if necessary:

- Server name: mail.desy.de
- Port: 465
- Encryption: "SSL/TLS" or "SSL"

Restrictions on Intranet Access from 04.02.2026
Starting Wednesday, 04.02.2026, at 12:00 PM, Cisco VPN-based connection attempts originating from devices with outdated operating systems will be blocked.
Additionally, only the Cisco VPN Client will be supported for Cisco VPN connections. Connection attempts via native VPN clients (such as IPSec on macOS) will no longer be possible from that point.

From Wednesday, 04.02.2026 access to the following services from outside will be restricted:

- Login via Kerberos (a central authentication service)
- Access to AFS (a central Linux file system)

To continue accessing these services from outside, please open the page https://it-access.desy.de beforehand. Only after that, login commands like kinit or aklog (for Kerberos) as well as fs listacl, fs setacl, or fs listquota (for AFS) can be executed.

Upcoming Restrictions for Intranet Access
Starting Tuesday, 13.01.2026, users establishing Cisco VPN connections with outdated operating systems will receive individual email notifications.

This is a preparatory measure ahead of the planned blocking of such connections from 03.02.2026, to ensure network security in compliance with the requirements of the Computer Security Council (RSR).

For macOS users, the option to use Apples native VPN client (IPSec) will no longer be available in the future. Alternatives are eduVPN or the Cisco VPN client (download via https://vpn.desy.de).

Computer Center and UCO Opening Hours towards the End of the Year
By the end of the year, the DESY data center and the UCO will be staffed:

- Mon., 22.12. and Tue., 23.12.
- Mon., 29.12. and Tue., 30.12.
- Fri., 02.01.

Each day from 9:00h; Mon.+Tue. until 17:00h / Fri. until 15:00h. The processing of requests may take longer during this period.

In addition, the PC workshop will not be staffed from 29.12. to 02.01. inclusive.

On the following days the DESY computer center as well as the UCO won't be staffed and thus only the IT on-call service will be reachable on the following days:

- Wed., 24.12. until Fri., 26.12.
- Wed., 31.12. and Thu., 01.01.
